GCC Leadership Salaries in India 2026: Site Head to Head of AI
CONTENTS+

India's Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are the offshore, company-owned centres that global enterprises run in India for technology, operations, analytics, finance and, increasingly, AI. They now employ about 2.36 million people across 2,117 GCCs and 3,728 units, with an estimated USD 98.4 billion in revenue in FY2026, according to the Nasscom-Zinnov India GCC Landscape Report 2026.

For most of that growth, the conversation about GCC pay was about engineers. In 2026 it has moved upstairs. The scarcest people in the GCC economy are now the ones who can run a centre as a business: site heads, functional heads, heads of AI and data, and founding leaders of new centres. This guide pulls together what is publicly known about GCC leadership salaries in India in 2026. It covers role, city and experience, what moves the number, how GCC pay compares with IT services, and what it takes to move into these seats.

HOW TO READ THE NUMBERS IN THIS ARTICLE

Salary sources measure different things. Some quote basic salary, some quote fixed pay, and some quote all-in compensation including bonus and long-term incentives (often parent-company RSUs). Each table below says what it measures and links to its source. Ranges are indicative. They vary by company, centre size, city and mandate. We have not created any figures of our own.

GCC leadership salaries at a glance

The four enterprise seats that GCC Foundry prepares people for carry the following indicative pay bands. These are the figures published on the GCC Foundry homepage, drawn from the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 and TeamLease.

Site / Centre Head₹1.5 to 4 Cr+A growing "million-dollar club" at the top end
Global Functional Head₹1 to 2.5 CrOwns a function globally from India

Founding seat, new centre₹1 to 2 Crplus equity. First leader of a new GCC

Source: GCC Foundry, citing Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 and TeamLease. Indicative; varies by company, city and mandate.

Independent public sources put the top seat in a similar range, with wide spread:

  • GCC ERA's salary report gives GCC leadership / site head (large centre) basic salary of ₹140 to 450 lakh at 15 to 25 years, rising to ₹160 to 700 lakh at 25+ years. Mid-market site heads get ₹60 to 120 lakh at 10 to 15 years and ₹80 to 250 lakh at 15 to 25 years. All figures are national annual basic, excluding bonuses and ESOPs (GCC ERA, GCC Salary Report 2026).
  • Exordiom, writing for employers hiring a first site leader, puts the total compensation band at roughly ₹1.5 to 2.5 crore a year for "a genuine functional leader with a dual mandate" (Exordiom, Hiring a GCC Site Leader).
THE TAKEAWAY

A ₹1.5 crore floor is common for real site-leadership mandates. The ceiling depends mostly on centre size and whether parent-company equity is included.

The GCC site head salary is the most searched number in this space, and the most misunderstood. A "site head" at a 150-person centre that a regional VP set up and a site head who runs a 5,000-person multi-function centre and sits on a global leadership team are different jobs that share a title.

Public job listings also give real data points. For example, a Michael Page listing for a GCC Head in Mumbai (a mid-sized, build-from-scratch mandate) advertised ₹1.08 to 1.32 crore per year (Michael Page job JN-062026-7047675). The same listing asked for "a track record of at least 2 GCC setups from scratch". Even at the lower end of the leadership band, the bar is high.

What separates ₹1 crore from ₹4 crore+: scale of the centre, breadth of the mandate (one function vs many), reporting line (to a global CEO/COO vs a regional head), and whether the package carries parent-company RSUs. More on this below.

GCC MD, CTO and head of engineering compensation

At the largest centres, the top role is often titled Managing Director, and the senior technology seat may be a Country Engineering Head or GCC CTO. Gladwin International, an executive search firm, publishes one of the more detailed public breakdowns:

GCC MD and Country Engineering Head pay, ₹ crore a year

Gladwin also describes typical GCC MD package architecture as roughly 60% fixed, 15% target variable and 25% global parent-company RSUs with four-year vesting. It notes that GCC MD packages have risen 30 to 40% at the top end since 2022.

These are the top of the market: multi-thousand-person centres with global integration mandates. Most leaders reading this will first step into a functional head, engineering head or site head role at a smaller centre, where the bands in the previous section are the better reference.

For engineering leadership one level below, see the city table in the salary by city section, which includes Engineering Manager, Director of Engineering and VP of Engineering bands.

Head of AI, data and platform salaries

AI, data and platform leaders are the fastest-moving part of the GCC leadership market. The GCC Foundry homepage cites ₹80 L to 2 Cr+ for Head of AI / Platform / Data, carrying a 40 to 60% AI premium (Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026 and TeamLease).

Other public data points:

  • AI skill premiums. The Hindu BusinessLine reports that AI, GenAI and ML roles in GCCs command skill premiums of up to 40%, and that GCC roles overall carry about a 20% premium over equivalent non-GCC roles (BusinessLine, "GCCs under pressure").
  • The pipeline below Head of AI. Savannah HR lists AI/ML Engineering Leads (8 to 15 years) at ₹40 to 60 LPA in GCCs, with year-on-year growth of 25 to 35% and an "extreme deficit" of supply (Savannah HR, The Mid-Level Vacuum in GCC Hiring). Data Engineering Leads are at ₹30 to 50 LPA.
  • India's AI hiring position. Nasscom-Zinnov describe India as the #1 AI hiring market globally for GCCs (Nasscom-Zinnov 2026).

Why the premium? Because most GCCs are being asked to show AI-led outcomes to headquarters, and very few leaders can both own the technology choices and defend the investment case to a CFO. A head of AI who can only do the first is paid like a senior engineer. One who can do both is paid like a business leader.

VP and director pay inside GCCs

Most professionals with 10 to 20 years of experience sit at the Director / VP layer. This is the pool GCCs promote site heads and functional heads from.

For non-engineering functions, GCC ERA's report gives (annual basic, national):

Notice how wide the 15 to 25-year bands are. Experience alone does not set pay at this level. Scope does.

GCC leadership salary by city

City matters, but less than scope. On the MutualCS benchmarks above, Bengaluru pays the most at every level. NCR is close behind. Hyderabad and Pune sit roughly 10 to 20% lower at the site-head level.

Where the leadership seats are matters as much as what they pay. Nasscom-Zinnov's FY2026 estimates of GCC units by city:

Hyderabad's share of India's GCC ecosystem rose from 12% to 14% between FY24 and FY26E, while Bengaluru held at 29% (Moneycontrol). More new centres means more founding leadership seats in Hyderabad, and founding seats often come with equity.

What drives GCC leadership compensation

Across the sources above, the same factors explain most of the gap between the bottom and top of each band:

  1. 01

Size and type of centre. Gladwin's tables show pay scaling sharply with FTE bands. GCC ERA separates "large" and "mid-market" site heads. A large-centre site head at 15 to 25 years can earn basic pay well above the mid-market range.

  2. 02

Mandate, not headcount. A small centre that owns AI, cybersecurity or product engineering for the parent can be worth more than a large centre doing routine transaction work. Industry voices quoted by BusinessLine make exactly this point: "The new measure is not how many people a GCC employs, but what it owns" (BusinessLine). Leaders who win mandates for their centre are paid for that.

  3. 03

Reporting line. Recruise's guidance for senior candidates is to read who you report to. A Director reporting into a global functional head can be more senior than a VP reporting to the local site leader (Recruise). Global reporting lines usually come with global pay structures and RSUs.

  4. 04

Equity and long-term incentives. At MD level, Gladwin estimates about a quarter of the package is parent-company RSUs. At founding-leader level, the GCC Foundry homepage notes "₹1 to 2 Cr plus equity". Always compare all-in numbers, not fixed CTC.

  5. 05

Scarcity. GCC Foundry's analysis of the market estimates about 6,500 leadership seats today and 30,000+ by 2030, with roughly 70% of leadership demand having no ready supply (GCC Foundry homepage). Separately, BusinessLine reports that 60% of GCC hiring now comes from other GCCs, and attrition is at 15 to 20%. In other words, centres are competing for the same small pool.

  6. 06

AI capability. The 40 to 60% AI premium on the homepage, and BusinessLine's "up to 40%" skill premium, apply most strongly to leaders who can make and defend AI investment decisions.

  7. 07

Annual increments. EY's Future of Pay 2026 projects GCC salary increments of 10.4% for 2026, ahead of IT services (9.6%), as cited by gccjournal.in and BusinessLine.

GCC vs IT services pay

The most common move into GCC leadership is from IT services or consulting. So how do the two compare?

“The GCC pay advantage is a seniority effect, not a flat uplift.”
GCC ERA, citing the Michael Page India Salary Guide 2026
GCC vs IT services, annual basic, ₹ lakh
GCCIT services / consulting
Leadership, 15 to 25 yrsHead of GCC ₹150 to 250 L · ITeS partner/MD ₹85 to 130 L

Captive application development vs ITeS architecture (5 to 10 yrs, basic)₹40 to 65 L₹45 to 60 LSame

So at mid-career, the money is roughly the same. At the leadership level, a GCC site head earns about twice an ITeS partner on basic salary, according to that comparison. Product companies and funded startups can out-pay both on basic salary, before equity (GCC ERA).

Other sources broadly agree on the direction, with different magnitudes. gccjournal.in estimates GCCs pay 25 to 40% more than IT services for equivalent roles on base salary. BusinessLine cites about a 20% premium for GCC roles over equivalent non-GCC roles.

What changes is not just pay but the nature of the job. In services, you deliver what a client defines. In a GCC leadership seat, you are expected to own outcomes, defend investment cases to headquarters, and argue for new mandates. That is where many strong services leaders struggle in their first GCC year.

How to move up into a GCC leadership seat

The salary bands above reward a specific set of capabilities. Based on how executive search firms describe what they screen for, here is what moves people from Director/VP into the enterprise seat.

Show that you built, not inherited.

AESC's guidance on site-leader hiring looks for people who have "built an organisation from under fifty people to several hundred, rather than inheriting one already at scale" and "recruited their own leadership bench" (AESC). Exordiom asks for "specific numbers and timelines" on builder track records.

Hold a global role, or something close to it.

AESC also lists having "held a global role, so the parent's leadership already treats them as a peer rather than a supplier". If your current role is entirely local, look for a global process or platform you can own end to end.

Learn to argue in money.

Site heads run P&L-like conversations with HQ: cost recovery, investment cases, build-versus-buy. AESC notes that the strongest candidates "can explain, without notes, why the work belongs in India on merit rather than on cost."

Become the person who can make the AI call.

Given the AI premium, the most direct route to the top of a band is to be the leader who can decide on AI architecture, economics and governance, and defend that decision. You do not need to write the code.

Build executive presence with HQ.

Exordiom highlights the ability to "manage up across time zones, disagree with a [global leader], and still keep trust". This is a learnable skill, and it is usually the gap.

Get the mandate in writing before you negotiate pay.

Recruise's advice: "negotiate the charter before you negotiate the rupees" (Recruise). Scope sets pay, so a clearer mandate gives you a stronger negotiation.

Expect search to find you, not job boards.

AESC suggests twelve to sixteen weeks from kickoff to signed offer for a first India leader, run as a retained search. Many of these seats are filled through networks before they are posted.

Preparing for the enterprise seat

GCC Foundry's Fellowship in AI-Native Enterprise Leadership is a six-month, weekend-format programme for professionals with 10 to 20 years of experience preparing for exactly these roles: site and centre head, global functional head, head of AI/platform/data, and founding leader of a new centre. Fellows work in pods of six with a seasoned GCC leader who reviews their work weekly. They build the investment cases, mandate pitches and AI decisions these seats are paid for, and earn an add-on IIM certification.

FAQs

What is the salary of a GCC site head in India?+

Public 2026 sources put it broadly between ₹1 crore and ₹4 crore+ a year, depending on centre size and mandate. GCC Foundry's homepage (citing Michael Page and TeamLease) gives ₹1.5 to 4 Cr+. GCC ERA gives ₹140 to 450 lakh basic for large-centre site heads at 15 to 25 years. Exordiom gives ₹1.5 to 2.5 crore total compensation for a site leader with a dual mandate. At the very largest centres, all-in packages including RSUs can be much higher (Gladwin International).

What is the GCC head salary in India for a new or mid-sized centre?+

For founding seats, the GCC Foundry homepage cites ₹1 to 2 crore plus equity. A public Michael Page listing for a build-from-scratch GCC Head role in Mumbai advertised ₹1.08 to 1.32 crore a year. GCC ERA gives mid-market site heads ₹60 to 120 lakh basic at 10 to 15 years and ₹80 to 250 lakh at 15 to 25 years.

Do GCCs pay more than IT services?+

At leadership levels, yes, by a wide margin in most sources. At mid-career, the gap is small. GCC ERA (citing Michael Page 2026) shows a GCC head at ₹150 to 250 lakh basic versus ₹85 to 130 lakh for an ITeS partner/MD at 15 to 25 years, but similar pay at 5 to 10 years.

How much does a head of AI earn in a GCC in India?+

GCC Foundry's homepage cites ₹80 lakh to ₹2 crore+ for Head of AI / Platform / Data, with a 40 to 60% AI premium. AI and GenAI skills carry premiums of up to 40% in GCCs, according to BusinessLine.

Which city pays GCC leaders the most?+

On MutualCS's 2026 benchmarks, Bengaluru pays the most at every level shown, followed closely by NCR, with Hyderabad and Pune lower. Bengaluru also has by far the most GCC units (1,080+ of 3,728, per Nasscom-Zinnov).

How many years of experience do you need to become a GCC site head?+

Most published bands for site head start at 15 to 18+ years (MutualCS lists 18+; GCC ERA's large-centre band starts at 15 years). Mid-market site-head roles appear from 10 to 15 years. Recruiters look for scope (team built, mandate owned, global exposure) more than years.

What is included in GCC leadership compensation?+

Usually fixed pay, an annual variable/bonus and, increasingly at senior levels, long-term incentives such as parent-company RSUs. Gladwin estimates a GCC MD package at about 60% fixed, 15% variable and 25% RSUs. MutualCS notes that site-head variable pay is often 20 to 40% of fixed CTC.

Methodology and sources

This article compiles publicly available 2026 salary information. GCC Foundry did not run a salary survey for this piece and has not modelled or estimated any figures. Where sources measure different things (basic vs fixed vs all-in), we have labelled them. Ranges are indicative and vary by company, centre size, city, function and mandate.
